BACKGROUND:

From what could be seen in the film, his parents' marriage was rock, plagued with intense arguments. Most of Baby's positive memories of that time centers around his mom who was a talented singer. During a trip, his mother and father got into a fight and a car accident ensued. As a result of the crash, Baby was left with severe tinnitus and lost both of his parents. Some time later, Baby entered the foster care system and was adopted by Joe, a disabled man with a speech disorder. It's unclear if Joe was disabled from the start or if it'd happened after he became Baby's foster father. Either way, life presumably wasn't easy for them since Baby ended up unknowingly stealing a Mercedes belonging to Doc. He lost the merch inside, so, consequently, he was forced into working for Doc to pay off the debt.

Skip forward to the beginning of the film, Baby was nearing the end of his working relationship with Doc. His debt was close to being paid off. Unfortunately, things went to hell and he got thrown in the slammer for a 25 year sentence (with a parole hearing after 5 if he's on good behavior). PERSONALITY:

Baby is an enigma. He shows a different side of himself depending on who he interacts with. When it comes to criminals or the people who he "worked" with, he rarely speaks (if at all), letting them assume or say whatever they want about him. (Most of the time, they think he's "slow" or there is something inherently "wrong" with him. It wouldn't be surprising if some mistook him for a mute.) Nonetheless, he's always serious, on guard, attentive, and passive around people he considers a threat. He avoids garnering attention on himself and he evades attracting trouble, quietly listening and following any instructions given to him. In a way, he can be surprisingly deceptive because he's much smarter than he lets on.

In fact, one could argue Baby is highly intelligent. He is not only a gifted driver (to the point where Doc calls him a "young Mozart in a go-cart" and "the best in the business") but he also has an exceptional memory and a sharp enough wit to outrun and evade cops on heists. He times every job perfectly to a song of his choice. He can hear something once and remember it line for line and he can improvise on the spot when it's needed.

That being said, Baby is still a kid. He likes to have fun and he wants to do things normal people his age would want to do. Although he appears shy and a bit socially awkward, another facet of himself surfaces when he's alone or when he's with people who he feels comfortable with (such as Joe or Debora). His confidence and charm shines through then, even if he still doesn't talk a lot. He has such a strong passion for music. He loves to sing and dance, and goof off to the beat of an array of songs (usually a mix of classic rock, jazz, funk, soul and hip hop from the 60s to the early 90s) in the multitude of iPods or mix tapes he possesses. Music defines him. It is who he is. He even goes so far as to create mixes of his own through sample audios he secretly records of conversations in his day-to-day life. Throughout the film, the music he listens to is extremely centric to his mood, his thoughts, and his actions.

Baby suffers from severe tinnitus which is a constant ringing in the ears. In order to focus, he has to constantly listen to music to function. It helps distract him from the noise. However, if a situation (or a person) can obtain his full attention on its own, then he may not need music at that moment. Otherwise, he can get sent into a state of panicked distress until he has something to listen to (or concentrate on) again. Baby is also susceptible to sudden flashbacks which can be triggered during any event that may remind him of the car accident he was in or his parents' death, such as unexpected acts of violence. When this occurs, he will freeze up until he snaps out of it or, alternatively, someone else snaps him out of it.

No matter how demure he may seem, Baby will do whatever it takes to protect the people he cares about. If his loved ones are endangered, he will step up to ensure their safety at all costs. He is a kind, caring, and good person at heart. He doesn't want to harm other people and he doesn't want other people to come in harm's way. Even when he commits a crime, he makes sure he isn't seriously hurting anyone in the process, such as saving a man from getting shot by Bats or handing a mother her child before he escapes in her car. He is simply someone who is trapped in an impossible situation, who longs for freedom and normalcy in his life. Unfortunately, even though he does finally manage to attain his freedom from Doc, he still faces the consequence of a life he never wanted to lead and he can only hope that one day he'll be able to receive a second chance at a fresh start.
